Howdy, iam William Munsey, Hope you’re doing well!

Smelts sure do love to eat! From plankton to small fish, these little guys will chow down on just about anything. And they don’t mess around either - smelts can eat up to five times their body weight in a single day! Talk about a hearty appetite. Wowza! It’s no wonder they’re such an important part of the food chain. Plus, they’re super tasty too - so it’s a win-win for everyone involved.

How Many Smelts Can You Eat? [Solved]

Hey, y’all! The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said on Monday that if you’re eating smelt from the northernmost Great Lake, don’t go overboard - limit yourself to one serving per month. That’s eight ounces for adults (which is about two to three of those tiny fish) and two or four ounces for kids.

  • Zooplankton: Smelts are filter feeders, meaning they primarily eat zooplankton such as copepods, krill, and amphipods.

  • Insects: Smelts also feed on insects that fall into the water from above.

  • Fish Eggs: In addition to zooplankton and insects, smelts will also consume fish eggs when available.

  • Algae: Smelts may also consume algae in order to supplement their diet.

  • Detritus: Lastly, smelts will scavenge for detritus (dead organic matter) on the bottom of the lake or riverbed where they live.

Smelts love to eat! They’ll chow down on anything from plankton to small fish. In fact, they’re voracious eaters - you can often find them munching away in large schools. Yum!
